Web-based technologies changed society in the way we communicate, inform ourselves or participate. Parties adapt to societal change. However, some parties find it more difficult than others to adjust to the challenges posed by digitalized society. Differences are visible between established and new parties, between different national contexts and different party families.These tendencies have been accompanied by research addressing changes in membership (Scarrow 2014, Gibson 2015), desicion-making (e.g. Gerbaudo 2019; Mikola 2018), or parties' public image (e.g. Koc-Michalska et al. 2016). Some recent publications even argues to understand newly developed parties as a specific type: the digital party or platform party (Gerbaudo 2019).
Researching this newest trend of studing political parties expects knowledge of classic party research in combination with other sciences - especially sociology, communication science, business studies, and IT and Computational (Social) Sciences.
The course emphasizes the political science perspective and adresses the challeges faced by parties in context of digitalization. This includes theoretical aspects as well as empirical studies from different contexts.
The course language is German. Solid English skills are mandatory to prepare the literature covered during the sessions.
