On Friday, June 5, 2020, Mrs. Edeltraud Roller passed away. She had headed our department since 2003 and deeply influenced generations of students and staff, doctoral candidates. Her analytical skills and remarkably systematic approach to every task are reflected in her academic work and made her an outstanding university lecturer and academic mentor. We are deeply saddened by the loss of our department head, but we also consider ourselves fortunate to have benefited from Edeltraud Roller’s commitment, fairness, and inexhaustible interest in students and her staff, until recently, a few days before her death. We miss her very much. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Academic career<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edeltraud Roller studierte Soziologie<\/a>, Politikwissenschaft<\/a>, Psychologie<\/a> und Wissenschaftslehre <\/a>an der Universit\u00e4t Mannheim<\/a>. From 1983 to 1990, she worked there as a research assistant in the Special Research Area 3 \u201cMicroanalytical Foundations of Social Policy\u201d and, from 1989, additionally at the \u201cChair of Political Science and International Comparative Social Research.\u201d In Mannheim, she also <\/a>obtained <\/a>her doctorate in 1990 with a thesis on citizens’ attitudes towards the welfare state in the Federal Republic of Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 1990 to 2003, Roller worked as a research associate at the Social Science Research Center Berlin<\/a> (WZB) and shaped the research program of the “Institutions and Social Change” department.[3]<\/a> At the Free University<\/a> of Berlin, she qualified as a professor<\/a> in 2002 with a thesis on The Performance of Democracies<\/em>.[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In September 2003, she accepted the offer of appointment to the chair for Comparative Political Science at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. With her research on the performance of democratic systems, to which she also published her main work “The Performance of Democracies,” she became internationally known. From 2009 to 2018, she also participated in the Research Training Group<\/a> The Christian Churches facing the challenge of ‘Europe’ (1890 to the present)<\/em>.[1]<\/a><\/sup>[3]<\/a><\/sup>[4]<\/a><\/sup>[5]<\/a><\/sup> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until 2006, she was the long-time spokesperson of the working group “Elections and Political Attitudes” at the German Association for Political Science (DVPW)<\/a>.[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She played a leading role in the development of the German sub-project of the European Social Survey<\/a><\/em> (ESS) for over a decade and was a member of the management of the sub-study “Society and Democracy in Europe”.[7]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until recently, Mrs. Roller was active in research and teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
